📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 128

“And the day He will gather them all [283], and He will say: ‘O company of jinn [284]! You have certainly made use of many among mankind.’ Their allies from among mankind will say: ‘O our Lord! We have enjoyed one another [285] and we have reached the term You have appointed for us.’ He will say: ‘The Fire is your abode, therein you will abide forever, except as Allah wills [286]. Indeed, your Lord is Wise, All-Knowing.’”

[283] The Gathering on the Day of Resurrection

This refers to Yaumul Hashr, when all creation will be raised togetherbelievers and non-believers, humans and jinn, righteous and wicked. After this, separation will occur, and the day becomes Yaumul Fasl (Day of Decision), when everyone will face their final outcome.

[284] Rebellious Jinn and Their Influence Over Mankind

The address here is to rebellious jinn who misled humans. Believing jinn will be shown mercy, while the evil ones are condemned. This highlights how jinn whisper evil, tempt the hearts, and misguide humans, particularly Satan and his descendants.

[285] Mutual Exploitation Between Jinn and Humans

Humans enjoyed jinn’s guidance in sin, and jinn enjoyed human worship, forming a corrupt alliance. These were worldly pleasures, but ultimately led to ruin. This verse exposes their shared guilt and hollow partnership.

[286] The Appointed Term and Divine Judgment

The “appointed term” refers to death for individuals and Qiyamah for all. Both humans and jinn acknowledge the fixed time set by Allah. The exception clause “except as Allah wills” refers to those whose faith was destined by Allah’s willthey will not enter Hell, as they will die in belief. This does not mean any disbeliever will later be removed from Hell.

Ibn-Kathir

128. And on the Day when He will gather them together (and say): “O you assembly of Jinn! Many did you mislead of men,” and their friends among the people will say: “Our Lord! We benefited one from the other, but now we have reached our appointed term which You did appoint for us. ” He will say: “The Fire be your dwelling place, you will dwell therein forever, except as Allah may will. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.”) Allah says, `Mention, O Muhammad, in what you convey and warn,’ that,

(on the Day when He will gather them (all) together.) gather the Jinns and their loyal supporters from mankind who used to worship them in this life, seek refuge with them, obey them and inspire each other with adorned, deceitful speech. Allah will proclaim then,

(O you assembly of Jinn! Many did you mislead of men,) So the Ayah;

(Many did you mislead of men) refers to their misguiding and leading them astray. Allah also said;

(Did I not command you, O Children of Adam, that you should not worship Shaytan. Verily, he is a plain enemy to you. And that you should worship Me. That is the straight path. And indeed he (Shaytan) did lead astray a great multitude of you. Did you not, then, understand) ﴿36:60-62﴾, and

(and their friends among the people will say: “Our Lord! We benefited one from the other…”) The friends of the Jinns among humanity will give this answer to Allah, after Allah chastises them for being misguided by the Jinns. Al-Hasan commented, “They benefited from each other when the Jinns merely commanded and mankind obeyed.” Ibn Jurayj said, “During the time of Jahiliyyah, a man would reach a land and proclaim, `I seek refuge with the master (Jinn) of this valley,’ and this is how they benefited from each other. They used this as an excuse for them on the Day of Resurrection.” Therefore, the Jinns benefit from humans since humans revere the Jinns by invoking them for help. The Jinns would then proclaim, “We became the masters of both mankind and the Jinns.”

(but now we have reached our appointed term which You did appoint for us.) meaning, death, according to As-Suddi.

(He (Allah) will say: “The Fire be your dwelling place…”) where you will reside and live, you and your friends,

(you will dwell therein forever. ) and will never depart except what Allah may will.

(6:128) And on the Day when He shall muster them all together, He will say (to the jinn):[94] ‘O assembly of the jinn, you have seduced a good many of mankind.’ And their companions from among the humans will say: ‘Our Lord! We did indeed benefit from one another[95] and now have reached the term which You had set for us.’ Thereupon Allah will say: ‘The Fire is now your abode, and therein you shall abide.’ Only those whom Allah wills shall escape the Fire. Surely your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.[96]

94. The term finn here refers to the evil ones among the jinn.

95. This means that they had derived unfair benefit from one another and had served their selfish ends by mutual deception.

96. Even though God has the right to punish whoever He wishes and to forgive whoever He wishes, His punishing and forgiving will be neither arbitrary nor whimsical. It will rather be founded on absolute knowledge and wisdom. God will forgive those whom He knows not to be responsible for their guilt, and thus not liable to punishment according to His wisdom and justice.
