369. Reason for Revelation:
One group from the infidels of Arabia had said that Taurah and Injeel were revealed to the Jews and Christians respectively, but these foolish people were unable to obtain guidance through them. If a Divine Book had been revealed to us we would have greatly benefitted from it because we are not foolish like them. This verse was revealed as a reply to them (Khazainul Irfaan). From this, we learn that one should not rely too much on one's intelligence. It is absolutely important to trust and rely on Allah Almighty. These infidels who were boasting of their intelligence gained nothing from it as they did not accept Islam and remained infidels.
370. From this emerge a few issues:
The Holy QURAN is a clear proof, a source of guidance, and mercy just as the Holy Prophet ? is bestowed with all these qualities.Â
2. The Holy QURAN is sent to all and for all, likewise, the Holy Prophet ? is sent as a Messenger unto entire mankind.
371. By this it meant the biggest tyrant is he who rejects the miracles of the Prophets and their books because he is really speaking causing injury to himself which would be a means of his eternal punishment. This means infidelity is the gravest of all sins.
372. By 'Belies the signs' means not accepting them. This means that one who belies the Holy Prophet and one who rejects him are equal in infidelity. Falsifying means to say that he is false, while not accepting means he neither calls him false nor true, but refrains from obeying him. Thus both are infidels.
373. Great torment either means punishment in this world e.g. the defeat in the Battle of Badr, etc, or punishment in the grave or the punishment in the Hereafter.

The tafsir of Surah Al-Anam verse 157 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 156 which provides the complete commentary from verse 156 through 157.
(6:157) Nor may you claim that: ‘Had the Book been revealed to us, we would have been better guided than they.’ Surely clear evidence has come to you from your Lord, which is both a guidance and a mercy. Who, then, is more unjust than he who gave the lie to the signs of Allah and turned away from them?[138] And We shall soon requite those who turn away from Our signs with a severe chastisement for having turned away.
138. ‘Signs of Allah’ include the teachings embodied in the Qur’an. They are also manifest in the noble life of the Prophet (peace be on him), and the pure lives of those who believed in him. Tley also include the natural phenomena to which the Qur’an refers in support of its message.
