68. And when you see those who engage in idle talk about Our signs, then turn away [133] from them until they engage in some other discourse [134]. And if Satan causes you to forget [135], then do not sit after remembering with the unjust people [136]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 68

"And when you see those who engage in idle talk about Our signs, then turn away [133] from them until they engage in some other discourse [134]. And if Satan causes you to forget [135], then do not sit after remembering with the unjust people [136]."

✅ Avoiding Disrespectful Gatherings of Disbelievers [133]

This verse teaches that Muslims must not sit with those who mock or speak irreverently about divine signs. Such gatherings are devoid of religious respect. Attending these assemblies is prohibited unless the intention is to counter the falsehood. Even Prophets were sent to confront disbelief, not to listen to it silently. This instruction protects the sanctity of faith from mockery and ridicule.

✅ Interactions with Non-Believers for Good Purpose [134]

The verse makes clear that meeting disbelievers for non-religious, worldly matters is permissible. Interacting with them for propagation of truth or calling towards faith is not only allowed, but commendable. When the intention is da’wah, such efforts become a source of reward. The believer must, however, maintain clear boundaries between permissible interaction and impermissible compromise.

✅ Leave Erroneous Places Promptly Upon Realization [135]

If one unknowingly joins a gathering where Allah’s signs are mocked, it becomes necessary to exit immediately upon remembering. The delay is excused only if it was caused by forgetfulness, not willful negligence. Remaining in such company after realization is blameworthy. This reminds believers to be vigilant and quick in removing themselves from harmful environments.

✅ The Danger of Evil Companionship [136]

The verse strongly warns against remaining among the unjust. Bad company leads to spiritual decay. An evil companion is considered more dangerous than a poisonous snake, as the snake may harm the body, but a wicked friend endangers one’s faith. Hence, keeping righteous company is essential for protecting belief and staying firm on the path of truth.

Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 66 which provides the complete commentary from verse 66 through 69.

(6:68) When you see those who are engaged in blasphemy against Our signs, turn away from them until they begin to talk of other things; and should Satan ever cause you to forget,[44] then do not remain, after recollection, in the company of those wrong-doing people.

Ala-Maududi

(6:68) When you see those who are engaged in blasphemy against Our signs, turn away from them until they begin to talk of other things; and should Satan ever cause you to forget,[44] then do not remain, after recollection, in the company of those wrong-doing people.

44. In case the Muslims fail to remember this directive and mistakenly continue to remain in the company of those who were indulging in making fun of their faith, they should withdraw from such company as soon as they remember this directive.

(68) And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse[316] concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.

[316]- i.e., denials or mockery.
