📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 53

"And thus We made some of them a trial for others, so that the wealthy disbelievers might say, when they see the needy Muslims, 'Are these the ones whom Allah has favoured among us?' [105] Does not Allah know best those who are grateful?" [106]

✅ Wealth vs. Truth: A Test of Perception [105]

This verse highlights that Allah has intentionally placed the wealthy and the poor in different positions to test each other. The wealthy disbelievers mocked the poor Muslims, questioning how people of lower status could be considered favoured by Allah. This reflects a common arrogance: judging truth by material wealth, rather than spiritual merit. The verse exposes the flawed thinking that material prosperity equals divine approval, a mindset that led many to reject Islam.

✅ True Guidance Belongs to the Grateful [106]

Allah affirms that He knows best who deserves His guidance. Wealth is not the criterion—gratitude is. Allah grants faith to those who are grateful, spiritually aware, and sincere. It is not status, but the capacity to thank Allah, that draws one nearer to Him. Thus, this verse emphasizes that faith is a divine gift, not tied to worldly ranks or riches.

Ala-Maududi

(6:53) Thus We have made some of them a means for testing others[36] so that they should say: ‘Are these the ones among us upon whom Allah has bestowed His favour?’ Yes, does Allah not know well who are the thankful ?

36. By enabling the poor and the indigent, the people who have a low station in society to precede others in believing, God has put those who wax proud of wealth and honour to a severe test.

(53) And thus We have tried some of them through others that they [i.e., the disbelievers] might say, "Is it these whom Allāh has favored among us?" Is not Allāh most knowing of those who are grateful?[310]

[310]- Those referred to in verses 52-54 are the poor Muslims who were sincere believers and students of the Prophet (ﷺ). The influential leaders of Quraysh had disdained to sit with them, saying to Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ), "Perhaps if you evicted them, we would follow you."
