144. And a pair of camels and a pair of cattle. Say, "Has He made both males unlawful, or both females, or what the wombs of the two females contain [325]? Were you present when Allah gave you this command [326]?" Then who is more unjust than one who forges a lie against Allah to mislead people without knowledge? Surely, Allah does not guide the unjust people [327]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(144) And of the camels, two and of the cattle, two. Say, "Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when Allāh charged you with this? Then who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh to mislead the people by [something] other than knowledge? Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people." (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 144

“And a pair of camels and a pair of cattle. Say, ‘Has He made both males unlawful, or both females, or what the wombs of the two females contain [325]? Were you present when Allah gave you this command [326]?’ Then who is more unjust than one who forges a lie against Allah to mislead people without knowledge? Surely, Allah does not guide the unjust people [327].”

[325] False Prohibitions Without Revelation Are Baseless

This verse addresses those who, like Malik bin Auf Jashamy, claimed certain animals were unlawful based on ancestral customs. The Prophet ﷺ refuted this, asking whether the prohibition was due to the animal being male, female, or unborn, highlighting the lack of any divine basis. This verse was revealed to confirm that such claims were mere fabrications.

[326] Were You Present When Allah Gave the Command?

Allah challenges the polytheists: Were you witnesses to any divine command forbidding these animals? Since no prophet conveyed such a law, and Allah did not declare them forbidden, their claims are proven false. Making up religious rulings without revelation is equivalent to lying against Allah, which is the gravest injustice.

[327] Guidance Is Withheld From the Persistently Unjust

Those who forge lies against Allah to mislead others are not guided while they remain in their wrongdoing. Divine guidance is reserved for the sincere. Either the unjust will remain misled, or they will only be guided once they abandon falsehood and accept faith. True righteousness begins with submission to divine truth.

Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 143 which provides the complete commentary from verse 143 through 144.

(6:144) And likewise, of camels there are two, and of oxen there are two. Ask them: ‘Is it either the two males that He has forbidden or the two females, or that which the wombs of the two females may contain?[120] Or were you present when Allah enjoined this commandment upon you?’ Who, then, would be more unjust than he who fabricates a lie against Allah that he might lead people astray without knowledge. Surely Allah never guides such a wrong-doing folk.

120. Questions as to whether the male offspring is lawful and the female is unlawful are presented in some detail to show how unreasonable their superstitions are. That the male offspring of an animal should be considered lawful for eating while the female be prohibited, or vice versa; and that an animal should itself be considered lawful, but not its offspring, is so manifestly unreasonable that common sense simply refuses to accept it, and no intelligent man can ever conceive such absurdities to have been sanctioned by God. Just as the superstitions in vogue among the Arabs were absurd, as the Qur’an stresses, likewise many other nations of the world follow even now irrational dietary restrictions, and believe that food and drink become polluted merely by the touch of some other people.

(144) And of the camels, two and of the cattle, two. Say, "Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain?
