📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 97

"And it is He Who has made the stars for you that you may find the way in the darkness [209] of the land and the sea. We have explained the signs in detail for a people who know [210]."

✅ Stars Serve as Navigational and Spiritual Guides [209]

Allah created the stars to guide travelers on land and sea in the darkness of night. They help determine direction and time, making them vital tools for navigation. Spiritually, stars also symbolize the blessed Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, who were described as guiding stars—sources of light and direction in matters of faith.

✅ True Knowledge Leads to Recognition of Divine Signs [210]

The verse emphasizes that all signs of creation are meant to guide those who possess true knowledge—that is, knowledge which leads to Divine awareness and mystical insight. If knowledge does not draw one closer to Allah, it is not considered true knowledge, but rather a veil of ignorance.

Ibn-Kathir

Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 95 which provides the complete commentary from verse 95 through 97.

(6:97) It is He Who has made for you the stars that you may follow the right direction in the darkness of the land and the sea. We have indeed spelled out signs for the people who have knowledge.[64]

Ala-Maududi

(6:97) It is He Who has made for you the stars that you may follow the right direction in the darkness of the land and the sea. We have indeed spelled out signs for the people who have knowledge.[64]

64. By ‘signs’ are meant all that support the proposition that there is only one God, that is, no one has either the attributes of God or any share in His authority or can rightfully claim any of the rights which belong exclusively to Him. But the ignorant cannot benefit from these signs, which are scattered all around, in order to arrive at an understanding of the Truth. Only those who observe the phenomena of the universe in a careful and systematic manner, and do so with a correct perspective, can truly benefit from these signs.

(97) And it is He who placed for you the stars that you may be guided by them through the darknesses of the land and sea. We have detailed the signs for a people who know.
