Transliteration:( Wa hum yanhawna 'anhu wa yan'awna 'anhu wa iny yuhlikoona illaa anfusahum wa maa yash'uroon )
"And they forbid from it and keep far from it [51], and they ruin not but their own souls, but they do not understand it."
This verse was revealed regarding those polytheists who not only rejected faith themselves but also prevented others from believing. They went to the extent of stopping people from attending the gatherings of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. According to Sayyidina Abdullah Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه), this verse also refers to Abu Talib, who defended the Prophet ﷺ from the Quraysh’s harm but did not openly accept Islam. Such people, knowingly or unknowingly, harm only their own souls, yet remain blind to their ruin. (Khazainul Irfaan)
