54. And when those who believe in Our signs come to you [107], then say to them [108]: "Peace be upon you. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(54) And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful." (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 54

"And when those who believe in Our signs come to you [107], then say to them [108]: 'Peace be upon you. Your Lord has prescribed mercy on Himself [109], that whoever of you does some evil ignorantly and repents [110] thereafter and amends, then indeed Allah is Most Forgiving, Ever Merciful.'" [111]

✅ Sincere Seekers Will Always Be Welcomed [107]

This verse includes all Muslims—past, present, and future—who sincerely present themselves before the Holy Prophet ﷺ. They are the ones deserving of the glad tidings mentioned. Just as the sun comes to us by rising, we must remove our veils of negligence to spiritually reach the Prophet ﷺ. As Allah says: "Assuredly there has come to you a Messenger..." (Surah 9:128), his presence remains accessible through spiritual awakening.

✅ Silent, Sincere Devotion Is Acknowledged [108]

There are three types of seekers:

  1. Those who beg openly, for whom forgiveness is assured (Surah 4:64).

  2. Those who offer prayers and send blessings (Surah 33:56).

  3. Those who quietly present themselves without words—this verse refers to them. To such sincere hearts, the Prophet ﷺ is commanded to say: "Peace be upon you."

✅ Divine Mercy Is Self-Written [109]

This verse affirms two truths:

  1. Mercy and forgiveness can be obtained through the blessing of servitude to the Prophet ﷺ.

  2. Allah has prescribed mercy upon Himselfno one imposed it upon Him. This reinforces that Allah’s mercy is voluntary and boundless, not contradictory.

✅ Repentance Requires Specific Action [110]

Each sin requires its own form of repentance. For rights violated, one must first fulfill those rights. Missed prayers demand Qazā. Without fulfilling such obligations, verbal repentance is incomplete. True repentance is action-based, not merely emotional.

✅ Two Conditions for True Repentance [111]

Repentance is accepted only when it includes:

  1. Regret for past wrong

  2. Correction and reform for the future
Even if the repentance is delayed, it remains valid until death. The word “thereafter” shows that time does not invalidate sincerity, as long as life remains.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Anam verse 54 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 50 which provides the complete commentary from verse 50 through 54.

(6:54) And when those who believe in Our signs come to you, say to them: Peace be upon you. Your Lord has made mercy incumbent upon Himself so that if anyone of you does a bad deed out of ignorance and thereafter repents and makes amends, surely you will find Him All-Forgiving, AllCompassionate.’[37]

Ala-Maududi

(6:54) And when those who believe in Our signs come to you, say to them: Peace be upon you. Your Lord has made mercy incumbent upon Himself so that if anyone of you does a bad deed out of ignorance and thereafter repents and makes amends, surely you will find Him All-Forgiving, AllCompassionate.’[37]

37. Several of those who came to believe in the Prophet (peace be on him) had committed many serious sins before they embraced Islam. Even though their lives had altogether changed following their conversion, the opposition continued to play up the weaknesses and misdeeds of their past life. The Prophet (peace he on him) is asked to comfort such persons and to tell them that God does not punish those who sincerely repent their sins and mend their ways.

(54) And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful."
