Transliteration:( Ulaaa'ikal lazeena aatainaahumul Kitaaba wal hukma wan Nubuwwah; fa iny yakfur bihaa haaa'ulaaa'i faqad wakkalnaa bihaa qawmal laisoo bihaa bikaafireen )
"These are the ones to whom We gave the Book [177], authority, and prophethood [178]. So if these people reject it [179], We have already entrusted it to a people who will not reject it [180]."
The term "Book" refers to any divine scripture, whether complete, in scrolls, or revealed in parts. Not every Prophet received a full book—some, like Haroon and Dawood عليهما السلام, preached the existing revelations, such as the Taurat revealed to Moosa عليه السلام. Others, like Adam عليه السلام, were given scrolls, which later Prophets continued to convey.
This verse confirms two principles:
Every Prophet possesses divine knowledge and wisdom, including the understanding and teaching of revealed scriptures.
While some may preach previous revelations, no Prophet is subordinate in Prophethood. Each is a complete and divinely appointed messenger, which invalidates false claims to Prophethood, such as those by Mirza Ghulam Qadiyani or others lacking integrity and spiritual legitimacy.
The rejection referred to in this verse points to disbelievers of Makkah, especially the leaders of Quraysh and others who persisted in denial until death. Despite seeing truth and miracles, they refused to believe, and thus their rejection is described as final and deliberate.
Allah declares that if the current people reject the truth, He will entrust the message to others who will not reject it. This prophecy was fulfilled through the Sahaba—Muhajireen, Ansar, and future righteous generations—who upheld and spread Islam. It also teaches that the honor of serving Allah’s Deen is a divine selection, not a right, and should be carried with gratitude and humility.
The tafsir of Surah Al-Anam verse 89 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 84 which provides the complete commentary from verse 84 through 90.
(6:89) Those are the ones to whom We gave the Book, and judgement and prophethood.[57] And if they refuse to believe in it now, We will bestow this favour on a people who do believe in it.[58]
57. Here the Prophets are mentioned as having been endowed with three things: first, the revealed guidance embodied in the Book; second, hukm, i.e. the correct understanding of the revealed guidance, the ability to apply its principles to the practical affairs of life, the God-given capacity to arrive at right opinions regarding human problems; and third, prophethood, the office by virtue of which they are enabled to lead human beings in the light of the guidance vouchsafed to them.
58. God does not care if the unbelievers and polytheists choose to reject the guidance which has come down from Him, for He had already raised a sizeable group of men of faith to truly appreciate its worth.
