📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 43

"So why did they not humble themselves when Our punishment came upon them [83]? But their hearts were hardened, and the devil adorned for them what they were doing." [84]

✅ Turning Back Before It's Too Late [83]

When Allah’s punishment descended upon past nations, they still did not humble themselves. Had they done so, the punishment could have been lifted, just as it was for the people of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) when they repented before the punishment fully arrived. However, if faith or repentance comes after the punishment has already begun—like with Pharaoh, who declared belief only while drowning—it holds no benefit. This verse emphasizes the importance of sincere repentance before it’s too late.

✅ The Worst Punishment: A Hardened Heart [84]

Among all forms of punishment, the most dangerous is the hardening of the heart—becoming spiritually numb and resistant to truth. When a heart becomes hard, even the teachings of a Prophet fail to move it. The devil makes their actions appear attractive, reinforcing their delusion and turning them further away from guidance. This state of heartlessness is a greater punishment than any external hardship.
