Quran Quote  :

Quran-6:88 Surah Al-anam English Translation,Transliteration and Tafsir(Tafseer).

Transliteration:( Zaalika hudal laahi yahdee bihee mai yashaaa'u min 'ibaadih; wa law ashrakoo lahabita 'anhum maa kaanoo ya'maloon )

88. This is the guidance of Allah. He gives guidance to whom He wills (175) of His bondsmen. And if they would have committed polytheism, surely all that they had already would have been destroyed (176).

Surah Al-Anam Ayat 88 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

175. It is thus understood that guidance of prophethood is a special bounty which is bestowed only upon selected people. By mere lifelong worship, a person cannot become the companion of the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم let alone become a Prophet. This guidance is not achieved through effort but is purely Divinely bestowed, therefore the verse states that Allah Almighty gives "to whom He wills".
176.Here polytheism is taken to mean infidelity i.e. if the Prophets had committed infidelity, their good deeds would have been destroyed. Neither of their names would have remained for their blessings. However their names and blessings, infact even their deeds are eternal. Thus the Kaaba built by Hazrat Ebrahim (On whom be peace) Safa, Marwa, the rite of Qurbani are all in existence. Therefore all these august personages were true believers. Similarly had the Companions of the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم gone astray after him, their names, blessings, and deeds would have perished but the presence of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique's Burial in Masjid E Nabawi, Hazrat Umar's Tarawih Prayers, and his Islamic conquests and Hazrat Uthman's(May Allah be pleased with them) completed Quraan, to this day bear testimony to their sincerity of Faith.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Anam verse 88 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 84 which provides the complete commentary from verse 84 through 90.

(6:88) That is Allah’s guidance wherewith He guides those of His servants whom He wills. But if they ever associated others with Allah in His divinity, then all that they had done would have gone to waste.[56]

56. Had those people also ascribed partners to God like the people of Arabia, they would not have achieved the positions they had attained. Some might perhaps have earned places in the rogues’ gallery of history as either ruthless conquerors or monuments to greed. But had they not shunned polytheism and adhered to their exclusive and unadulterated devotion to God, they would certainly neither have had the honour of becoming the source of light and guidance to others nor of assuming the leadership of the pious and the God-fearing.
