(88) That is the guidance of Allāh by which He guides whomever He wills of His servants. But if they had associated others with Allāh, then worthless for them would be whatever they were doing. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 88

"This is the guidance of Allah. He grants guidance to whomever He wills [175] from among His servants. But if they had associated others with Him in worship, surely all their deeds would have been rendered worthless [176]."

✅ Prophethood Is a Special Gift, Not Earned by Deeds [175]

This verse clarifies that the guidance of Prophethood is a special bounty granted only to those whom Allah chooses. It is not acquired through lifelong worship or personal effort. No one can reach the rank of a Prophet—even the companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ—except by Divine selection. This guidance is exclusive, not merit-based, but will-based.

✅ True Prophets Never Committed Shirk or Lost Their Deeds [176]

The warning in this verse is hypothetical, stating that if the Prophets had committed shirk (infidelity), their deeds would have become void. But the eternal impact of their actions—like the Kaaba, Safa, Marwa, and Qurbani—proves their true faith. Similarly, the legacy of the Sahabah such as Hazrat Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman continues, affirming their sincerity and unwavering belief.

(6:88) That is Allah’s guidance wherewith He guides those of His servants whom He wills. But if they ever associated others with Allah in His divinity, then all that they had done would have gone to waste.[56]

Ala-Maududi

(6:88) That is Allah’s guidance wherewith He guides those of His servants whom He wills. But if they ever associated others with Allah in His divinity, then all that they had done would have gone to waste.[56]

56. Had those people also ascribed partners to God like the people of Arabia, they would not have achieved the positions they had attained. Some might perhaps have earned places in the rogues’ gallery of history as either ruthless conquerors or monuments to greed. But had they not shunned polytheism and adhered to their exclusive and unadulterated devotion to God, they would certainly neither have had the honour of becoming the source of light and guidance to others nor of assuming the leadership of the pious and the God-fearing.

(88) That is the guidance of Allāh by which He guides whomever He wills of His servants. But if they had associated others with Allāh, then worthless for them would be whatever they were doing.
