6. Have they not observed [11] how many generations We have destroyed before them? We had established them on the earth with that which We did not establish for you [12], and We sent the sky upon them with abundant rain and made rivers flow beneath them [13]. Then We destroyed them for their sins and raised up another generation after them [14]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(6) Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others. 📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 6

"Have they not observed [11] how many generations We have destroyed before them? We had established them on the earth with that which We did not establish for you [12], and We sent the sky upon them with abundant rain and made rivers flow beneath them [13]. Then We destroyed them for their sins and raised up another generation after them [14]."

✅ Reflection Through Observation and Travel [11]

The command “Have they not observed” urges reflection upon the ruins and remains of past nations. These sites were visible to the Quraysh during their travels, and the verse calls for understanding and insight from the destruction they witnessed. Observation here includes both physical sight and historical reflection.

✅ Power and Prosperity Could Not Prevent Their Fall [12]

The destroyed nations were granted strength, prosperity, and resources far beyond what the current people had. Yet their technological or physical superiority could not save them from divine punishment. This shows that no worldly power can withstand the decree of Allah once it is due.

✅ Historical Record Validates Qur’anic Truth [13]

The people of Makkah were familiar with these historical events—such as the prosperity of past nations blessed with rain and flowing rivers. This affirms the importance of history as a science, and events that do not contradict the Qur’an are regarded as authentic sources of reflection and lesson.

✅ Nations Were Replaced, Some Never Rebuilt [14]

The phrase “another generation” refers to Allah replacing past nations like Pharaoh’s people or those like him. In some areas, new communities settled, while in others—such as the regions of Aad and Thamudruins remained desolate forever. This verse reflects a general principle, not an absolute law that every destroyed place will be repopulated.
