"Humiliation has been imposed upon them [245] wherever they are. They will find no security [246] except for a rope (covenant) from Allah and a rope (treaty) from people [247]. They have drawn upon themselves anger from Allah, and they will face destruction [248]. This is because they used to reject the signs of Allah and unjustly slay the Prophets [249]. Their fate is a result of their disobedience and transgression."
The ignominy mentioned here could have been upon those People of the Book during the time of the Holy Prophet ﷺ who were present but did not obey. It may also refer to all the Yahud in general, implying that their ways and conditions will resemble those who are disgraced. They will always remain subordinate to others, and even if they occasionally establish a regime, it will be temporary. If Allah Almighty wills, their state will always be a precursor to disgrace — similar to a weaker fighter being humiliated by a stronger opponent in a martial arts match. The present-day Jewish state in Palestine, if Allah wills, will also be a forerunner to a greater humiliation upon them.
From this we learn that the disgrace and misery mentioned is not upon all Jews, but upon those among the Yahud who completely disobeyed Allah’s commands as described in this verse. Therefore, if a Jewish state is established (such as the current one in Palestine), it does not contradict this verse. In fact, books of Hadith foretell that near the end times, there will be wars between Muslims and the Yahud, in which all Jews will be slain. So much so, if a Jew hides behind a rock, the rock will proclaim his presence to be killed by the Muslims. If such a state were not established, this prophecy would lose its relevance.
This means that the Yahud will survive only under the protection of other powers — whether under Muslim rule or the Nasara (Christians). In the current era, their regime is supported by the Americans. Therefore, they are a sovereign state only by name, while their real protectors and backers are external Western powers, particularly the United States.
In spite of their material wealth, the Yahud are deprived of contentment. Their lives are marked by a lack of peace and satisfaction. Outwardly they may seem prosperous, but inwardly, they are found to live in a miserly and degraded condition, often like paupers, lacking real joy or spiritual fulfillment.
Their unjust killing of Prophets is a historical and theological fact, although they justified these acts with various false arguments. In reality, killing a Prophet is an act of the greatest injustice, no matter the rationale offered. This verse makes clear that such actions, along with denial of divine signs, were among the core reasons for their divine punishment.
The tafsir of Surah Imran verse 112 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Imran ayat 110 which provides the complete commentary from verse 110 through 112.
(3:112) Wherever they were, they were covered with ignominy, except when they were protected by either a covenant with Allah or a covenant with men.90 They are laden with the burden of Allah’s wrath, and humiliation is stuck upon them – and all this because they rejected the signs of Allah and slayed the Prophets without right, and because they disobeyed and transgressed.
90. If the Jews have ever enjoyed any measure of peace and security anywhere in the world they owe it to the goodwill and benevolence of others rather than to their own power and strength. At times Muslim governments granted them refuge while at others non-Muslim powers extended protection. Similarly, if the Jews ever emerged as a power it was due not to their intrinsic strength but to the strength of others.
[144]- Once they have surrendered, the People of the Scripture retain their rights and honor (in spite of their refusal of Islām) through payment of the jizyah tax in place of zakāh and military service due from Muslims. They are then under the protection of the Islāmic state.
