Transliteration:( Wa maa kaana qawlahum illaa an qaaloo Rabbanagh fir lanaa zunoobanaa wa israafanaa feee amrinaa wa sabbit aqdaamanaa wansurnaa 'alal qawmil kaafireen )
"And they uttered nothing [316] more than this prayer: 'O our Lord, forgive our sins and everything we have done in excess in our matters, and make firm [317] our steps, and help us against these disbelieving people' [318]."
By “them” is meant the Prophets, who are innocent and free from sins or extravagance. Yet, in this verse, they are seen supplicating for forgiveness, not because of actual sins, but due to their deep humility and modesty. This is the real beauty of righteousness — when such pious individuals consider themselves sinful, while Allah Almighty refers to them as pure and upright.
In their supplication, they pray for Allah to make their steps firm, meaning: grant them the strength and courage to oppose the disbelievers with full might. It must be understood that true steadfastness in battle is granted only through the special Grace of Allah Almighty, and not dependent on military equipment or numerical strength.
Several key lessons emerge from this powerful supplication:
One should make du'a (supplication) during Jihad, just as it is done during Salaah and Fasting, for Jihad is also an act of worship, and du'a during worship is most beloved.
Before making du'a, one should seek repentance for sins, and begin by praising Allah Almighty and reciting Darood Shareef, as these are adornments to du'a.
During battle, do not place reliance on weapons or numbers, but on the Grace and Help of Allah Almighty alone.
No pious person should boast about their righteousness, for doing so can lead to heedlessness of Allah and spiritual decline.
