📖 Commentary / Tafsir of Surah Aal-e-Imran – Verse 66

"Behold! You are those who have disputed [143] in matters of which you have knowledge, but why do you dispute about that of which you have no knowledge? And Allah knows while you do not know."

✅ [143] Rejecting Clear Truth Despite Having Knowledge

This verse criticizes those People of the Book who argued:

  • Despite having true knowledge of the coming of the Holy Prophet ﷺ,

  • And being aware of his signs, character, and prophethood,
They still rejected him out of stubbornness.

Disputing knowingly—especially about truth conveyed by the Prophet—is an act of deliberate rebellion, not mere misunderstanding.

⚠️ Important Clarification:

  • If one disagrees respectfully with the Prophet’s personal opinion (not divine revelation), it is not apostasy, as shown in:

“And undoubtedly a group of Muslims were unhappy. They were disputing...” (Surah 8:5)
Here, the disputing Muslims were still considered believers.

Therefore:

  • Rejecting the Prophet’s divinely revealed message = disbelief

  • Respectful disagreement on non-revelatory matters = not sinful or disbelief

This verse also reminds that Allah’s knowledge is perfect, while human judgment is limited—so one must submit to divine truth when it is clear.
