📖 Commentary of Surah Aal-e-Imran – Verse 194

“O our Lord! And grant us what You have promised through Your Messenger [442]. And disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection. Surely, You do not break Your Promise.” [443]

✅ [442] The Promise Through the Messenger is Allah’s Promise

This verse confirms that any promise made by the Holy Prophet ﷺ is, in reality, a promise from Allah Himself.

From this, we learn:

  • Whoever has been promised Paradise by the Holy Prophet ﷺ is indeed guaranteed Paradise, by Allah’s will.

  • While making du‘a, it is recommended to mention the promise of the Prophet ﷺ, as it strengthens the sincerity and acceptance of the supplication.

For example, during Tahajjud, one may recall the Prophetic promise that “du‘a made in the last part of the night is accepted”—and use it as a basis to plead for mercy.

This verse also teaches that:

  • Disgrace on the Day of Judgment is one of the severest forms of divine punishment.

  • The righteous constantly pray for protection from such humiliation, which reflects their humility and awareness of divine justice.

✅ [443] Allah’s Promise is Unbreakable—But Are We Worthy?

The final part of the verse reaffirms that:

  • Allah never breaks His promise. His words are absolute, unlike human pledges which may fail.

  • The fear expressed is not about Allah's side, but about our own shortcomings“O Allah! Grant us the ability to be among those who truly deserve Your promise.”

This reflects the sincerity of the believers, who fear not the truthfulness of Allah, but their own failure to meet the criteria of the promised rewards.

Please refer to Surah Imran ayat 190 which provides the complete commentary from verse 190 through 194.

(3:194) ‘Our Lord, fulfil what You promised to us through Your Messengers, and disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection; indeed You never go back on Your promise.[138]

Ala-Maududi

(3:194) ‘Our Lord, fulfil what You promised to us through Your Messengers, and disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection; indeed You never go back on Your promise.[138]

138. Such people do not doubt the fact that God will fulfil His promises. What they do doubt is whether they will be reckoned among those for whom those promises were made. Hence they pray to God to make them worthy of His promised rewards. They are afraid lest they remain targets of slander and ridicule by the unbelievers in this world, and then be disgraced in the Hereafter before the same unbelievers who may mock them once again saying that their faith has been of no avail to them.

(194) Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise."
