Transliteration:( Wa ka aiyim min Nabiyyin qaatala ma'ahoo ribbiyyoona kaseerun famaa wahanoo limaaa Asaabahum fee sabeelil laahi wa maa da'ufoo wa mas takaanoo; wallaahu yuhibbus saabireen )
"And how many a prophet fought [312], and with him fought many godly men [313]. But they never lost assurance due to what afflicted them in the cause of Allah, nor did they weaken or give in [314]. And Allah loves the steadfast [315]."
Holy war (jihad) began in the time of Hazrat Ebrahim (Peace be upon him), who was the first Prophet to wage a holy war. After him, many Prophets in various Shari'ahs also practiced and led jihad in the path of Allah. This verse references that Prophets of the past faced severe trials, but they remained firm in the cause of truth.
By “godly men” is meant the saints and pious people who dedicated their lives to seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty. According to Sufi terminology, these are the Men of Allah, those who are deeply devoted to the Prophet ﷺ and become his true followers and lovers.
As Allah Almighty says:
“Whoso obeys the Messenger, indeed obeyed Allah Almighty” (Surah An-Nisa, Verse 80),
and again:
“Then follow me, Allah Almighty will love you” (Surah Aal-e-Imran, Verse 31).
Thus, obedience and love for the Prophet ﷺ is the ultimate path to Allah’s pleasure.
Since the Holy Prophet ﷺ is the leader of all Prophets, and the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ is superior to previous nations, therefore your courage and steadfastness should also be superior to theirs.
From this, two key points emerge:
Those who are better in rank should be better in virtue. Leaders, scholars, and saints must excel in piety more than others.
It is the way of Allah Almighty to inspire others by narrating the examples and deeds of earlier righteous people. Therefore, to gain historical knowledge with the intention of inspiration is highly beneficial and commendable.
Allah loves those who are patient, and this includes:
Those who remain firm in devotion and obedience
Those who abstain from sins
Those who do not waver during trials and difficulties
Patience is of three types, and in this verse, the third type is intended—patience in the face of trials, as is evident from the context of battle and hardship.

Please refer to Surah Imran ayat 144 which provides the complete commentary from verse 144 through 148.
(3:146) Many were the Prophets on whose side a large number of God-devoted men fought: they neither lost heart for all they had to suffer in the way of Allah nor did they weaken nor did they abase themselves.[107] Allah loves such steadfast ones.
107. They did not surrender to the followers of falsehood merely because of their numerical inferiority and lack of resources.
