Transliteration:( Allazeena qaala lahumun naasu innan naasa qad jama'oo lakum fakhshawhum fazaadahum emaananw wa qaaloo hasbunal laahu wa ni'malwakeel )
“Those to whom people (the hypocrites) said: ‘People have gathered against you, therefore fear them.’ But it (merely) increased them in faith [392] and they said: ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and what an excellent Disposer of Affairs [393].’”
This verse teaches that faith can intensify or deepen—not necessarily in quantity, but in sincerity and emotional conviction. The intensity of Iman (faith) manifests through one’s reaction to trials.
When believers are warned or threatened, instead of retreating, their faith becomes stronger. For them, fear becomes a source of spiritual growth. Thus, worldly hardships are in fact a blessing for sincere believers, drawing them closer to Allah.
Reason for Revelation: This verse refers to events surrounding the Second Battle of Badr, which took place in 4 A.H., a year after the Battle of Uhud.
At Uhud, Abu Sufyaan had announced that the battle would resume at Badr the following year. True to their word, the Muslims arrived at Badr, but Abu Sufyaan, fearing defeat, stayed away.
To discourage the Muslims from going, Abu Sufyaan sent Naeem ibn Masood Ashja’i to intimidate and dissuade them by saying that a massive enemy army was on its way. However, this propaganda had no effect.
Instead, the Muslims firmly responded:
“Allah is sufficient for us, and what an excellent Disposer of Affairs.”
Their trust in Allah remained unshaken.
From this, we learn that this verse should be recited in times of hardship, fear, or danger. It is a statement of complete reliance on Allah, embodying courage, faith, and surrender.
