Transliteration:( Allazeena yazkuroonal laaha qiyaamanw-wa qu'oodanw-wa 'alaa juno obihim wa yatafakkaroona fee khalqis samaawaati wal ardi Rabbanaa maa khalaqta haaza baatilan Subhaanaka faqinaa 'azaaban Naar )
“These are the people who remember [435] Allah standing and sitting and lying on their sides [436], and contemplate the creation of the heavens and the earth (saying): ‘O our Lord! You have not created this without purpose. Exalted are You; then save us from the punishment of Hell.’” [437]
This verse praises those who remember Allah constantly, showing that true understanding and wisdom are reflected not just in intellect or worldly gain, but in:
A heart that is connected to Allah,
A life immersed in remembrance, and
Prioritizing spiritual success over material accomplishments.
Hence, even if a person doesn’t attain worldly success, but remembers Allah regularly, he is considered truly intelligent in the eyes of Allah.
The verse mentions remembrance of Allah in three physical states:
Standing,
Sitting,
And lying down.
This teaches that Zikrullah (remembrance of Allah) should be done under all conditions—in health and illness, in movement or rest, without restriction.
Wudu is not required for making Zikr, which reflects the ease and accessibility of worship.
Many people, even at the time of death, are found reciting the Kalimah, even without being in a state of Wudu—demonstrating the power of lifelong remembrance.
Before asking Allah for anything, these people:
Glorify Allah: “Exalted are You”
Acknowledge the purpose of creation: “You have not created this without purpose”
And invoke Him sincerely: “O our Lord!”
From this, we learn:
Praise of Allah before making du‘a is a Sunnah and recommended etiquette.
The continuous repetition of “O our Lord” and “Subhanak” (Glory be to You) is a means of attracting divine mercy.
These people seek protection from Hell, understanding that even deep reflection should lead to humility and fear of the Hereafter.
The tafsir of Surah Imran verse 191 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Imran ayat 190 which provides the complete commentary from verse 190 through 194.
(3:191) those who remember Allah while standing, sitting or (reclining) on their backs, and reflect in the creation of the heavens and the earth,[135] (saying): ‘Our Lord! You have not created this in vain. Glory to You! Save us, then, from the chastisement of the Fire.[136]
135. This means that with the help of those signs one can easily arrive at the Truth, provided one is not indifferent to God and looks at the phenomenon of the universe thoughtfully.
136. When people look carefully at the order of the universe, it becomes clear to them that it is an order permeated by wisdom and intelligent purpose. It is altogether inconsistent with wisdom that the man endowed with moral consciousness and freedom of choice, the man gifted with reason and discretion, should not be held answerable for his deeds. This kind of reflection leads people to develop a strong conviction that the After-life is a reality. Thanks to this conviction, they begin to seek God’s refuge from His punishment.
