Transliteration:( Illal lazeena taaboo mim ba'di zaalika wa aslahoo fa innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem )
"Except for those who repent thereafter and amend [197] themselves. Indeed, Allah is the Most Forgiving, Ever Merciful [198]."
This verse teaches us two essential conditions for sincere Tawbah (repentance):
One must feel disgust and remorse for past sins.
One must hold a firm intention for future correction and reform.
Repentance is open for all sins, including apostasy, though the method and rulings vary depending on the nature of the sin.
This verse was revealed about Hazrat Harith ibn Suwayd Ansari, who had become an apostate and joined disbelievers.
Upon feeling deep regret, he approached the Holy Prophet ﷺ and asked if true repentance would be accepted.
This verse was then revealed. He sincerely re-entered Islam, and his repentance was accepted.
This proves that even apostates can be forgiven, but some cases — like repeated apostasy or insulting the Prophet ﷺ — may still carry specific legal rulings, such as the death penalty, even after repentance.
