Transliteration:( Laiyaqta'a tarafam minal lazeena kafarooo aw yakbitahum fayanqaliboo khaaa'ibeen )
"That He may cut off a portion of the infidels [274], or overpower them, so that they may go back disappointed [275]."
From this verse, we learn that the disbelievers at Badr fell into three distinct categories:
Those who were killed in battle by the Muslims.
Those who were taken as prisoners.
Those who fled from the battlefield despite having felt certain of victory beforehand.
For the disbelievers, especially those who fled in defeat, this was a great humiliation, as they had entered the battle with pride and left it in disgrace.
The phrase "go back disappointed" reveals that the disbelievers of Badr would be divided into two groups:
One group, including Abu Jahl, Abu Lahab, Umayya, and others, would be killed on the battlefield.
The other group, including Abu Sufyan, would flee in humiliation, having been defeated despite their arrogance.
It is also noteworthy that many from the second group—those who fled—later embraced Islam, further demonstrating the wisdom and mercy of Allah Almighty even in the midst of divine retribution.
